Each year there is a “Woman's World Day of Prayer”, this is a worldwide celebration and the church in Pickering take it in turn to hold the occasion. This year it is the turn of the U.R.C. and takes place on March 5th at 2.00pm. The service itself has been prepared by the Christian women of Cameroon and will be led by the Rev. Denise Megson. Mrs. Betty East from Saint Joseph’s Church will be the speaker. Tea and biscuits will be provided at the end of the service. This will be a most interesting afternoon of worship and prayer, everyone is very welcome including the menfolk. Our open house meetings are continuing as usual in the church hall at 2.30pm. On March 18th the talk is called “Travels of a Removal Man”, given by Jeff Andrews. There are two further meetings on April 15th and May 20th the subjects are yet to be confirmed. Each talk is followed by informal discussion of a tea and biscuits. Meetings are open to everyone. On Good Friday, April 2nd there will be a walk of witness through the town followed by a short service at the U.R.C. On Easter Sunday morning service, Holy Communion will be celebrated. A free CD from the United Reformed Church – “God so loved the world.” This CD contains stories and music about the life of Jesus. It is suitable for the whole family to listen to, or children and adults on their own. It is divided into twelve sections, each one lasting approximately five minutes. One idea for family listening, would be to spend ten minutes once a week, listening to the story and music, and then on reflecting how the teachings of Jesus are relevant to us, today. Many young (and not so young) people in our society have not had the opportunities, as in the past, to hear the stories of Jesus. The Archbishop of York said “Christianity is a tapestry upon which our country's heritage is woven.” We, at the United Reformed Church, hope that this CD will be a small step in rebuilding our Christian heritage in this land.
