As we all know the weather over the Christmas / New year period was challenging for us all. Conditions on our roads were at times very difficult. However it is pleasing to report that the majority of motorists were clearly well prepared to deal with the conditions and drove in a careful manner, adjusting speed and distance accordingly.

Speeding does remain a problem. As such officers will be out enforcing the speed restrictions in the area as well as mobile phone and seat belt offences as part of Operation Anvil. This is a force wide initiative to combat poor driver  behaviour. I would advise residents to adhere to the speed limits and regulations regarding mobile phones and seat belts.

We continue to work in partnership with the local licensees. Recently you may well have seen a report in the local newspapers regarding an initiative to combat the misuse of drugs in licensed premises. In the near future we will be holding operations, using a passive drugs dog, in licensed premises to detect and apprehend those people using drugs in the pubs. Posters have already be supplied and  displayed in the pubs regarding this.

It has come to our attention that some under 18 year olds have been using false identification in the pubs in order to  purchase alcohol. We do make regular checks of licensed premises and will  challenge anyone we suspect is consuming alcohol under age. Anyone presenting false identification, be warned action will be taken against them. I accept that this has gone on for years and some people may feel it is harmless. However irresponsible behaviour of this nature can have a direct impact on a landlords license and therefore their livelihoods.

Your local officers will continue to target the “hotspot” areas of town where incidents of antisocial behaviour are more prevalent. If you have issues regarding problems of this nature please let us know when and where it is happening.

In my last article I reported a year on year reduction in crime of 10% in the Ryedale area. The news is now even better! Up to the 20th January 2010 our year on year figures show a reduction of 18%. In real terms that means 300 less crimes have been committed to date. I would ask for your continuing help in keeping these figures low by taking simple steps to secure your property. Modern cars are much harder to steal nowadays due to security measures manufacturers have built into the vehicles. As such the car thief has had to adapt and is now stealing keys to gain access to vehicles. They prey on the fact that numerous people will leave their car keys close to front doors on shelves or hooks. Some enterprising thieves are now literally “fishing” for these keys through letter boxes in order to steal high value cars. It is easy to stop this just don’t leave your keys close to a letter box or on window sills.
