HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SINNINGTON PEOPLE'S GUILD - 100 YEARS OLD IN OCTOBER 2010!

On October 5th 1910, a meeting was called to consider the formation of a Guild - to be called "The People's Guild". Meetings were to be held fortnightly on Wednesdays at 7-15pm. The inaugural meeting on Wednesday 26th October 1910, was to be a public one and Mission hymn books were to be used.

The first president was the Rev. J N Grindell.

Through the years there have been long serving officers: Mr Edward Scaling serving 42 years as President and Mrs Molly Scaling 30 years as Secretary and is still an active officer. Miss Hesp was the organist for 44 years.

From 1913 to the late 1920’s the Guild attended many rally’s throughout the area.

The initial membership fee was 3d (approx, 1½ p), this remained static until 1953, when it was doubled - (6d or 2½p)The price was increased over the years until it was 20p in 1984 and abolished in 2000.

The Guild is active in fundraising and has helped the Methodist Schoolroom over the years.

The Guild is welcoming, friendly and ecumenical. We try to provide an interesting, challenging and spiritual programme from October to March. We enjoy our musical evenings when collections are taken for various charities. We still meet on Tuesdays at 7-15pm at the Methodist Chapel- there is no membership fee and all are welcome to any or all of the meetings.- there is always a cup of tea at the end so we can continue our fellowship, talking to our speakers and each other.

So 2010 is our centenary year- we start on Tuesday 19th October 2010 with a visit from the Dalesmen Singers. Sunday 24th October we are having a Guild Sunday. We start with a tea, to be followed by a service of thanksgiving and celebration at 6-15pm. We are delighted to welcome the Chairman of the District - Rev Stephen Burgess to be our guest preacher.

We have a very varied programme for our centenary year- from musical evenings to spiritual to speakers and slides, including Mr Jim Wight who will talk on his father-The Real James Herriott. Pick up a syllabus and put the dates in your diary! We shall be delighted to welcome YOU.

 Jill Simpson.
