The choir is currently without a Musical Director! This is serious! After around 60 years, if we cannot find a suitable director for the Spring concert and beyond, the future of the choir may be in doubt. Much to everyone’s relief the redoubtable Betty Walker, she of the twinkling eyes and trademark knitting needle baton, has generously offered to step in and hold the fort for one season - directing the choir for a Christmas concert of carols and readings. We are urgently in need of a new Director as soon as possible. However, the skills required to lead the fifty strong choir are a big ask. We may be amateurs but aspire to professional standards - we are not quite in the same class as the Huddersfield Choral Society - yet! With strong bass and alto sections we, like most amateur choirs, need tenors and sopranos (New members always welcome). We are enthusiastic, committed, don’t do badly at sight reading, tend to listen and try to do as we are told, marking our scores lest we forget. Fond of the classical repertoire, we do two concerts a year but we are not afraid of a challenge and there isn’t much we won’t tackle, though some modern pieces take a bit of getting used to after Handel, Mozart and Vivaldi! Where will we find someone with a sense of humour, tolerance to cope with singers with ability from professional to beginner and yet be firm enough to keep up standards? Mary Cowton, Press Officer.
